I paint large Canadian prairie landscapes which are abstract, lively and colourful depicting the mood and vastness of the prairie. My small Irish landscapes, soft, flowing and subdued, capture the field patterns, and the mountains of the Glens of Antrim. I live in Canada nine months of the year but spend winters in Ballycastle, Northern Ireland. Born and educated in Belfast, I was an art educator both there and in Zambia before I left teaching to do my art full time. My favourite subject is landscape -Irish and Canadian. I work from photographs taken on my many walking trips into the Canadian prairie and the glens of Ireland. I love colour and movement -- my work is abstract and expressionistic.
I exhibit at Woodlands Gallery, Winnipeg, Effusion Art Gallery, Invermere, both in Canada. Two galleries show my work in Ireland/ N. Ireland, the Janet Ross Gallery in Ramelton, Co. Donegal , the Battletown Gallery in Co. Down and the Henry Gilmore Gallery in Holywood, N. Ireland. I recently had a successful exhibition of my newest prairie paintings at Woodlands Gallery in Winnipeg. And one of these paintings was featured on the cover of "The Uniter". Look at the Woodlands Gallery website to see the paintings there and at the Effusion Gallery website also.
I am looking forward to painting in N. Ireland this winter and spring. And to having another show in 2011. I have a website: http://www.hughgrice.com
