Jane Cartney Jane Cartney

THE MARZIPAN SCHOOL. In August 2008 Cartneys iconic painting The Station inspired visionary poet Barrie Singleton to pen the poem The Marzipan House and subsequently to coin the phrase The Marzipan School for the body of Cartneys work. The birth of The Marzipan School was officially announced on 5 August 2008 on http://scotsvernacular.blogspot.com. Cartney is a professional Scottish artist, currently based at Regent Gallery & Studio in Weston-super-Mare on the Somerset coast, while maintaining strong links with Scotland. She specializes in oil painting on canvas, giclee prints, and pen and ink drawings, as well as portraits on commission. Cartney's oeuvre is inspired by the strength of form and colour, in architecture, landscape and the human body. Recent work from the Marzipan School has focussed on several series of paintings and prints inspired by architectural landmarks in Scotland and The West Country, and pheasants and striking black and white cat paintings and drawings "I strive to express graphically the power of the subject, the mass and movement in the structure, the spectrum of colour radiating from the object, in essence the life force. The intangible inspires me to paint, in much the same way that hearing a piece of music or a particular voice inspires me to sing. I am driven to create and recreate the experience of initial inspiration and to communicate and share the sentient experience with the viewer." Work can be viewed in person at Regent Gallery & Studio in Weston-super-Mare by appointment. Call +44(0)1934 418198 for further information.
