My earliest works represent my attempts to capture the magic of the ancient rock and cave painters. Those first artists used images to bend reality to their will and in these works the theme of art as magic merges.

Thats why I focus on animal art, those early painters tried to act on the natural world, the world that most impacted them. Like them, for me, art is all about magic. Its the transmutation of elements — alchemy in its purest form.

After all, isnt art really about taking an empty canvas or blank piece of paper and transforming it something else entirely? Surely breathing life into imagination is every bit as magical as the transmutation of lead into gold.

Ultimately I believe that art is about making an emotional connection with the audience, and that’s its own kind of magic.
