In CEGEP in the 80’s I studied art. Afterwards I worked in an animation studio painting backgrounds. For a time I worked in the theatre building sets and creating lighting design. It was not until the 90’s that I decided to focus on fine art as a full-time occupation. The idea of working in collage had been in my mind for years. Even so, the first one that I produced surprised me. I decided that I wanted to make pure collage; no mixing of media, just paper and glue. Still, I was amazed at the flexibility of the technique. I quickly developed a working system. I soon realized that magazines were an excellent source of color. I gravitated towards the more expensively produced magazines. The colors are often quite lush, and the paper sturdy enough to be easy to work with. I use mostly VOGUE and HARPER’S BAZAAR, though I have had good results using LIFE magazines from the 60’s. They provide a completely different palette than a contemporary magazine. I cut sections of color and use them as building blocks to compose with. I use a roller to flatten the paper, producing the smoothest possible surface. The pieces range from miniatures to as large as 3’X 4’. I usually start with an idea, but as I work the composition tends to find its own direction, and the results are always different and often better than what I imagined. Typically, a completed work will be more interesting when turned upside down or at 90 degree angle from the way it was originally composed. Over the last few years I have been sculpting, primarily in marble. My approach to the stonework echoes my collage. I alternate between improvisations with an organic quality, and pieces with a more whimsical or humorous nature.
