Ben McPhee
Graduating in 2005 from the University of Coventry, in Fine Art, Ben McPhee has since gone on to exhibit in galleries, shows and events nationally. Based in Walsall and following on from shows in London and Manchester, Ben has exhibited in a variety of shows in the local area. Selected for the large scale visual arts festival New Art Birmingham, he has also exhibited with the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Birmingham Artists, Colony Gallery, and more recently with West Midlands Creative Alliance in Birmingham’s world famous Custard Factory, the up and coming Chameleon Gallery, The Burrows Gallery and the Midlands Art Centre (the MAC). Further a field Ben has exhibited with the well respected Stroud House Gallery in Gloucestershire, Coventry’s Herbert Art Gallery, Battersea Park - London and a variety of features online. Working with magazines such as Channel 4’s “Ten4” and new magazine “Multicultural” Ben’s photography is based upon the urban landscape which people ignore and treat with contempt everyday. His work brings the urban spaces of cities and towns to the attention of the people who live inside them and yet may have never truly seen what is right in front of them.
His work documents his travels around particular towns and cities picking out areas and objects which are ignored, unseen or perhaps even unheard of, by the inhabitants of the places themselves. But even “famous” objects which cannot be ignored or missed can take on new meaning with Ben’s work. Using both digital and analogue photography Ben creates new structures or areas out of existing ones, manipulating and changing the environment to satisfy his own intrigue, making something seen everyday into something else, not instantly recognisable, yet familiar, forcing the audience to question what is real and what is not.
